In the Basement? – Dan Holin

MIB was conceived in Mark Prior's basement as he and I rode on stationary trainers during the winter of 2003. It was a somewhat odd situation, as we had never ridden on the road together. There we were, pushing each other to go harder, longer, the music blaring and the occasional daughter coming down to visit. One day, as we were wrapping up a session, one of us said to the other "Dude, you're a monster". To which the other responded, "Yeah right...in the basement.." The rest is history, including an empire of a club, otherwise known as "Monsters in the Basement"!

What I love about this club is the sense of community and the support I get from it. The sense of community comes from a shared, regular yet intense experience I get from every group ride and other club activities, like "Beer and Bottom Brackets". The rides have inevitably spun off some new, great friendships and shared experiences, like doing Mt. Washington and the Six Gap ride or going to do some Go Cart racing. The other, less formal dimension of the club has to do with the support you get from club members. I believe riding together accelerates friendships, not just conditioning. It has been heartwarming to see riders supporting riders, be it around parts or a tech question, to dropping by on an injured friend and giving free medical advice (even though not a doctor, but hey...)

Ride on!
