The Return of Mr. Jantzen – Philip vanderWilden

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Hey All,

Just wanted to share the following ride report. I had the pleasure of riding our Nagog Hill route with Mr. Jantzen today at noon and have a formal announcement to make:

THE MOURNING AND SYMPATHY PERIOD FOR PETER’S BROKEN ARM IS NOW OFFICIALLY FINISHED!

I went out somewhat reluctantly thinking I could use a rest day, but the minute Peter showed up at the fountain in Concord Center, the pace started right up as I set my data collectors to zero.

Off we went at a good clip, with Peter saying he needed to be back by 1pm to get ready for an appointment. As we cycled away, he mumbled something about riding with Holin yesterday out in Harvard and Holin giving him some breathing advice about powering up hills. Breath deep, eat organic, live in peace, love thy neighbor – crap like that. Well, whatever Dan said, it worked, cause every hill we hit on the route we motored up at between 18-19 mph and then kept right on going.

Herr Jantzen kept saying he hoped he wasn’t slowing me down and that he hoped I wasn’t dogging it for him. I assured him I was certainly not dogging it, while my glasses kept splating with continuous sweat drips. I said let’s wait and see what the data said back in Concord. Well, at one point when I was pulling hard, Peter thought it was raining but found that it was just my sweat streaming backward (he thought it quite refreshing). To be honest, I kept thinking, he has to drop off my wheel now, but nope, there he was every time. And to make matters worse (as I have been accused of doing by Mr. Holin) he was still chatting in a steady voice whether he was pulling or drafting.

Well, we rocketed down Strawberry Hill, onto Barretts Mill, and onto Lowell for the home stretch to the circle. When we finally stopped at the fountain, I checked the data and here is what it said:

Time: 1hr 18 min. 11 secs
Distance: 27.7 miles
Average Speed: 21.2 mph
Average Watts: 273

Yikes. I do not know about Mr. Jantzen, but I thank god that I work alone so I can put my feet up and no one will notice when I nod off in the middle of reading this proposal in front of me.

So, NO MORE SYMPATHY FOR JANTZEN (it should now all be directed towards Will’s recovery) &

SIGN UP NOW FOR THE DAN HOLIN COMPLETE CYCLING SYSTEMS (move over Chris Charmichael).

Respectfully Reported By,

Philip
